Irvine is one of the more far-off suburbs of Los Angeles, located far to the south, southeast of Santa Ana, and directly east of Newport Beach. Many of Irvine’s attractions are related to the nearby Pacific Ocean, and the place is a well-known destination for boaters, swimmers, and surfers.
Balboa Pier is a popular location for anglers, and it features dining accommodations for anyone unlucky enough not to make a catch of their own. Near the pier, you’ll find The Wedge beach, which is a popular spot for surfers thanks to the huge waves that regularly come into it.
Irvine also has no shortage of parks, including the Crystal Cove State Park and the Irvine Regional Park. Fans of machinery will be interested in the Lyon Air Museu, which contains an assortment of vintage airplanes as well as motorcycles. Finally, the Orange County Great Park allows you to perform some aerial observation from a tethered helium balloon.

Population
While Irvine existed for about 100 years as a ranch owned by the Irvine family, the land wasn’t committed to the creation of a city until 1959. This was shortly after the University of California purchased land from the family to found their new campus, and a planned city was designed to support it.
This city would eventually become Irvine, though in the 1970s, the plan for the city’s growth was revised upwards, far beyond the anticipated population of 50,000 people.
