Population
The land around Long Beach was home to the Rockaway People until they sold it in 1643 to European colonialists. They farmed and fished for a few hundred years before there were any permanent settlers. Brooklyn developer Austin Corbin and the Long Island Railroad partnered to bring the railway into Long Beach in 1880, and Corbin built the Long Beach Hotel.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors came to stay in Long Beach the first year, cementing it as a resort community. Developer William Reynolds, along with other investors, bought up a large area on the water and built the boardwalk in 1907. The city continued to grow dramatically, and although there were setbacks with fires and Hurricane Sandy, this city is thriving with a growing tourist industry and vibrant community.
Today, the total population of this amazing American city is 33,454 people.
