The Tongva People inhabited the land for thousands of years before the Mexican Land Grants named this place Rancho el Susa. The property changed hands several times before being sold to Henry Dalton in 1844 and he renamed it Rancho Azusa de Dalton.
He built up the town including a mill, winery and vineyard. When California was ceded to the US, Dalton retained the land but with various court battles for ownership, funded by LA banker Jonathan S. Slauson, the property was signed over to Slauson in 1880.
The city was incorporated in1898 and the railroad brought many people looking to settle in the community.
