In 1602, explorer Bartholomew Gosnold came to the area and later, early settler Reverend Joseph Hall founded the town. A memorial plaque marks the site of his home today.
In 1638 farmers settled in the area and by 1685 it became the county seat. Agriculture, salt works and fishing were Barnstable’s first industries. The New England molasses and rum trade was a booming business in the Barnstable port in the 1700s and the railroads came to town in 1854. It became a tourist hot spot by the end of the 1800s and continues to this day. Many prominent politicians and wealthy families have their summer homes in the area as the Cape is a breathtaking site to live and visit.
