- Thomas F. Baldwin purchased the land in 1856, naming it “LaVergne” meaning the virgin in Spanish. In 1901 the city was later renamed Berwyn after a town in Pennsylvania.
- Berwyn was incorporated as a village in 1902, and in 1908 it was reincorporated as a city.
- The first land sold in Berwyn was to Theodore Doty, who built the 8-foot-wide Plank Road from Chicago to Ottawa in 1846.
