Settled by the Clanton family in 1887, Buckeye was first named Sidney after settler Malie M. Jackson’s hometown in Ohio. Jackson laid out the canal, calling in Buckeye canal after his home state and M.E. Clanton built it. The Clanton family opened up the Buckeye post office after the canal and residents referred to the area as Buckeye. In 1910 the name was officially changed.
After the railroads came the community grew and more building sprung up. Buckeye expanded over the years to the great city it is now.
