The Tongva people called this area their homeland for 1000s of years. During the Mexican Land Grants it became Rancho La Puente. It was later founded in 1882 by Joseph Swift Philips and was named by an engineer, Frederick Eaton, who surveyed the area for Philips. Eaton noticed how the San Gabriel Mountains formed a cove that wrapped around the existing vineyards and joined “cove” and “vine” to name the town.
