The Potawatomi People lived in the area around Salt Creek for hundreds of years before 1836, when European settlers arrived. In 1842, Gerry Bates started the community and attracted people to join him. By 1845 ”Cottage Hill” was established with a post office and four years later the railroad came to town.
It was renamed Elmhurst in 1869 and two years later the University was founded. Elmhurst became a village in 1882 with population less than 1,000. The Elmhurst Memorial Hospital started operating in 1926 and was the first in DuPage County.
Today, the total population of this historic American city is 46,746 people.
