Farmington Township was settled by a group of Quakers from Farmington, New York in 1823. Incidentally, Farmington, NY was named after Farmington, Connecticut. The new settlement became known as Quakertown.
By 1826 a post office was opened with the name Farmington and the township was organized the following year. 100 years later Farmington was incorporated as a city. Many large businesses operate in Farmington Hills including Nissan, Hitachi and Mercedes Benz.
Today the population is 80,612.
