The first known inhabitants in the area were the Nipmuc People. In 1730 European settlers came and John Fitch helped to incorporate the town in 1764.
During the American Revolution, one-fifth of the town’s residents went to war. After independence, the town grew as more people settled and sawmills and gristmills sprang up. More industry followed and soon a railway was built to ship goods to other areas. In 1872 Fitchburg became a city and the downtown core expanded to include a courthouse, library, municipal building, and a hospital.
Residential communities were built around the area and Fitchburg developed into a great, prosperous city.
Today, the total population of this small American city is 40,638 people.
