Archeological evidence has shown that the area around Gainesville has been inhabited since at least 12,000 years ago. Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Potano tribe. The Spanish were the first to settle Gainesville, though Florida was ceded by the Spanish to the US in 1821.
The American city of Gainesville was founded in 1854, though it took until 1869 for it to become incorporated, and it was later chartered as a city in 1907.
