Population
Gilbert was officially established and named in 1902 when William Gilbert offered some of his land to the railroad. By 1912, the town had a grocery store and a post office. In that same year, Gilbert experienced an influx of Mormon immigrants who established themselves in the area.
Between the 1910s and 1920s, Gilbert earned its nickname as a hay farming town, though business eventually slowed down. Since then, Gilbert has largely been a residential area that feeds into industries in the nearby city of Mesa.
