The lands in the Milwaukee area were inhabited for more than 12,000 years by various indigenous tribes before European explorers came to the area. In 1839 the town of Kinnickinnic was created when Milwaukee County was split into townships. The postmaster Olney Harrington changed the name to Greenfield two years later. Several towns incorporated and took land away from Greenfield while Milwaukee began annexation in the area. When Greenfield finally became a city in 1957, it was one third its original size but still was the largest community.
