Here’s some cool information and fun facts about Greenville, Mississippi. Indigenous tribes lived in the area for thousands of years before French explorers arrived and came across the Natchez people. They developed a settlement and named it Natchez. The first town of Greenville popped up close to Natchez but fizzled out after the American Revolution. In 1884 William W. Blanton founded a second Greenville, and settlers started moving in. After the 1830 Indian Removal Act, the town grew with cotton plantations running with slave labor.
It became a trading hub for the cotton industry until the Union Army burned it to the ground during the Civil War. The third and final Greenville was built on donated land from Harriet Byron McAllister Blanton Theobald, and a church, school, and town shops were erected.
This is the Greenville that survived to be the vibrant city it is today.
