The area where Harrisburg now sits was home to the “Peixtin” aboriginal people for 1,000s of years before European explorers came. Explorer Captain John Smith traveled from Virginia to Pennsylvania and made early contact with the Susquehanna tribe.
English trader John Harris settled in the area in 1719 and was later granted 800 acres of land. His son laid out the town in 1785, naming it Harrisburg after his father.
The rich farmland attracted many European settlers and agriculture flourished. In 1812, Harrisburg has named the capital of Pennsylvania and was an important hub for industry and a railroad center. In 1790 the first census was taken in the United States and Harrisburg was a small town with a population of 875 residents.
