The founder of Harrisonburg, Thomas Harrison started the city by providing 2.5 acres of his land to Rockingham County in 1779. During the Civil War, Harrisonburg was officially part of the Confederacy, though the city’s government was against seceding. In 1916, Harrisonburg was finally incorporated as a city.
