Hartford is both the capital of Connecticut and one of the oldest settled cities in the United States. Sports fans will know the city because of their defunct hockey team, the Hartford Whalers, but the city has other notable attractions. Much like the city, many of these attractions are among the oldest of their kind in the USA.
Bushnell Park is the country’s oldest public park, the Hartford Courant is the country’s oldest newspaper that is still published, and the Wadsworth Atheneum is the oldest public art museum. However, not everything in Hartford is that old, and there are plenty of recent small businesses in the city looking to expand their customer base.

Population
Before European establishment in the area, Hartford was home to various nomadic Algonquin tribes. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch, who arrived in the early 1600s. They were followed by English settlers who arrived near the mid-1600s.
During the 19th century, Hartford grew increasingly industrialized, and one of the most influential people in the city’s development was Samuel Colt, the father of the Colt firearms company. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Hartford’s suburbs grew and flourished at the expense of the city itself.
