Killeen’s history started in the late-1800s when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway expanded its operations through the middle of Texas. Killeen was named after the assistant general manager of the railway, Frank P. Killeen. The town was originally focused on the railroad shipping industry.
During WWII, the future of Killeen changed forever with the creation of Camp Hood (later to become Fort Hood). This led to Killeen becoming one of the country’s first military boom towns.
