British Steel tycoon Peter Kirk came to the north coast in the 1800s looking for places to develop. He wanted to create a “Pittsburg of the West” on Lake Washington and expand his steel production in the area.
Partnered with other Seattle business owners, Kirk built the Moss Bay Iron and Steel Works company with hopes of connecting a ship canal and railway system. The 1893 stock market crash ended his expansion and he closed shop.
The town of Kirkland lived on with new industries of ship building and by 1917 a ship canal was opened and in the 40’s, the Kirkland shipyard was building Navy vessels.
Several towns came together and in 1968 Kirkland became a city. More communities joined and created the thriving city that we see before us.
Today, the total population of this vibrant American city is 93,010 people.
