The Kizh People lived in a village called Awinga long before Spanish explorers came to the area. The Mission San Gabriel was established as part of Rancho La Puente and by 1826, settlers arrived. John Rowland and William Workman took ownership of the land and named it Puente after the Spanish word “Bridge,” for the San Jose Creek crossing built by the Spanish explorers in 1769.
The community grew and agriculture was the main industry. In the 1930s fruit trees and walnut grew in abundance. After WW II there was a housing boom and it overtook the farmland. It is mostly an urban area today with a strong family focused community.
