For thousands of years, the Nisqually and Squaxin people occupied the land before European settlers came. Among the first settlers in 1853 were Isaac and Catherine Wood and they named the area Woodland.
When they applied to put in a post office, the name was changed to Lacey, after O. C. Lacey, the local Justice of the Peace. The population grew but didn’t incorporate until 100 years later in 1966.
Forest products and the cattle industry lead the growth in the community and as more businesses moved in it helped develop what is a great city today.
