The Shawnee People owned land in the area and had 200 acres given to each member of their tribe. In 1867 a man named Charles A. Bradshaw bought land from the Shawnee as they were eager to move to Indian territories in Oklahoma. He had 160 acres in the area and the railroad made a deal to travel through his land as long as they constructed a depot there.
Around 1869 he sold 41 acres to Octave Chanute, who began setting up the town and by 1907 in was incorporated. European settlers came to buy land and start farming with spinach dominating their crops and by the 1930s, over 150 farms grew the green gold.
Today, the total population of this historic American city is 55,625 people.
