Originally the Nashua People lived on the land until grants were given to new settlers in 1701 after the King Philips War. Leominster became a town in 1740 and during the Civil War, it was part of the Underground Railroad, helping to free slaves.
Leominster went from a farming community to manufacturing and became known for comb making. In 1853 there were 24 comb factories operating in the town as well as paper mills. Celluloid was invented in 1868 and used to produce combs instead of natural materials like animal horns. Viscoloid Company started making toys from the new “plastic” but was sold to Dupont in 1925.
Leominster became a manufacturing hub and with increased industry, the population followed.
Today, the total population of this great American city is 41,716 people.
