During the 1859 Pikes Peak gold rush, a community developed to service the needs of the miners, while families came to farm and start businesses. Engineer Richard Sullivan Little settled there in 1962 and helped build the Rough and Ready Flour Mill five years later. Industry started and attracted more settlers and by 1890, with 245 locals, they voted to incorporate the town.

The main industry was agriculture but it began to transform into manufacturing including electronics, munitions, and aerospace.
