For 10,000 years the Chumash and other indigenous people lived in the Lompoc Valley. The first European people to come to the area and built the La Purisima Mission in 1787 and 100 years later the city was incorporated.
Produce was shipped by boat until the railroad came and in 1901 the line connected Lompoc to Los Angeles and San Francisco. This caused the expansion of agriculture and included flower growers in the area, calling it the “Valley of Flowers.”
Mining developed in the valley and in 1941 the Camp Cook army base was built, changing to Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1958. Tourism now plays a huge role in the city and is known as “The City of Arts and Flowers.”
