The city was founded in 1950 by Jack Marquese with an idea to build a retirement community. It was mostly farmland and everglades at the time but when the town was incorporated in 1955, the area was developing and people were moving in.
6 years later Margate became a city. The name came from Jacks last name combined with “gate” to express the city as a gateway to the county. The city plans was to create a population of around 35,000 but it’s popularity grew.
Today, the total population of this small American city is 58,796 people.
