In 1847 Mormon pioneers came to the area followed a year later by the Mississippi Saints group to settle in the Salt Lake Valley. Several other families came later and helped establish the new community and farm the land. When ore was discovered in the valley around 1869, smelters opened up to process metal and ship it out along the railroad. The town grew around the new industry and got its name from civil war general Eli Murray.
