In 1839 Pittsburg was settled after 10,000 acres was granted to Jose Anyone Mesa and Miguel Jose Garcia. 10 years later Colonel Jonathan D. Stevens bought the grant, laid out the town and called it “New York of the Pacific” after his native New York.
When coal was discovered in Nortonville, it became a coaling port and nicknamed “Black Diamond.
“Pittsburg” settled in 1911, a final name change to honour Pennsylvania’s Pittsburgh as both were steel and mining cities.
Camp Stoneman was built for WW II and caused huge growth for the city. US Steel opened its Columbia Steel plant in Pittsburg and employed hundreds of people since 1910, still operating today with 700 workers.
