The area was originally settled by the Seminole and Timucuan people. In 1804 the Spanish Crown gave Patrick Dean just under 1000 areas to farm citrus and sugarcane and he used the Halifax River to ship it to market. Those plantations were destroyed in 1836 during the Seminole War.
After the Civil War the area was built up again by Dr. John Milton Hawks.
