The Potowatami People occupied the land long before European settlers arrived. Moses Austin came to the area in 1833 and helped start a settlement on the shores of a lake, which would become Austin Lake. Austin became the post master and soon the railroad came through and put in a station.
Agriculture started as the area had very rich soil and celery became the main crop. The town grew as more settlers came to farm the land and with the Kalamazoo-Grand Rapids Plank Road Company constructing roads to connect different communities, Portage was established. The city was incorporated in 1963 and is a thriving community.
