Population
Redding was established during the California Gold Rush, and it was originally known as Poverty Flats because of the poor results of prospecting in the area. In 1868, a railroad land agent known as Benjamin B. Redding bought land on Poverty Flats to establish a train terminus.
The town of Redding gradually grew around the terminus, even while it was still being constructed, and it was eventually incorporated in 1887.
