The Coast Miwok People lived on the land for thousands of years before they met Sir Francis Drake in 1597, during his explorations of California. In 1812 Russian trappers settled Fort Ross and missions were founded in the early 1800s.
Land in the area was granted to Captain Juan Castaneda in 1844 but he later split it up and sold it to new settlers. In 1929 the Rohnert family started a seed company and the town was named after them. They planted seeds and hay and were very successful.
The area was developed into housing for US servicemen coming home from war and the city grew to accommodate the new families.
Today, the total population of this American city is 43,291 people.
