Before European explorers came to the region it was occupied by the Kansa People. Preston B. Plumb started the first settlement in the area and it was founded in 1858. It became a trading post for local tribes as well as prospectors.
The first school opened up in 1864 followed by the arrival of the Kansas Pacific Railway in 1867. Salina was a cow town in the late 1800s but transformed into wheat production with flour mills and other agriculture industries. The US army airfield helped the population swell in the 1950s and later it was converted into the Salina Municipal Airport.
