San Bruno is a city, 12 miles from downtown San Francisco and is in San Mateo County. Originally a small town, San Bruno grew rapidly because of the US Army in the 1940s using areas in town for an internment camp and the Army’s Western Region Advanced Personnel Depot. This brought thousands of military people into town and after their service, many came back to start a new life in San Bruno, causing a huge housing boom.
The San Francisco Airport is right at the heels of the city and San Bruno benefits from the influx of tourists flowing into the region. While YouTube and Walmart are the major employers in the city, there are many great shops and restaurants that are locally owned and thriving. Locals definitely support their homegrown businesses.
