Father Junipero Serra founded the Mission San Gabriel in 1771 with the help of the Gabrieleno-Tongva People living in the area. It was one of 24 missions in California and agriculture was the main industry.
Mexican settlers came to be baptized at the mission and many stayed to start a new life. The mission was known not only for its agriculture production but also for its water system. The mission was the heart of the town and a community grew around it. In 1913 San Gabriel became a city with 1,5000 residents and has continued to grow and prosper since.
