Schenectady, New York was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River in the 17th century by Dutch colonists. It’s actually a Mohawk name for Albany, New York – where most of the Dutch settlers came from.
In 2014 it was announced that the city was one of three sites selected for the development of off-reservation casino gambling and it once was known as “The City that Lights and Hauls the World”. This name came from the fact that the Edison Electric Company and American Locomotive Company were based there.
