Scottsdale was founded by a retired US Army chaplain named Winfield Scott, and he and his family established citrus plantations around the area, drawing in other settlers who personally knew Scott.
Unlike many other frontier towns, much of Scottsdale’s initial population was cultured and well-educated. This is evidenced by the early establishment of the Scottsdale Public School system, in 1896.
During the 1950s, Scottsdale began growing exponentially, and this lead to the establishment of the Indian Bend Wash flood plain.
