Sunrise is part of Broward County in the Miami metro area, located to the west of Fort Lauderdale. Like many of the surrounding communities, Sunrise didn’t take off until after the Baby Boom, and people were drawn to it by a developer, Norman Johnson, in 1961.
Since then, Sunrise has become a key residential part of the Miami metro area, and the city is known for its many parks, including Markham Park, the Sawgrass Sanctuary, and Nob Hill Soccer Park. Like many other cities of its size, Sunrise is also home to many competing businesses that have cropped up around the residences.

Over the 1970s, the city grew into a bedroom community for Fort Lauderdale because of the nearby interstate. In the 1990s, the Sawgrass Mills shopping center expanded immensely.
