Both British and French traded with the indigenous people, but as they tried to get more land, the tribes resisted. The 1830 Indian Removal Act relocated the tribes, and European settlers named the area Gum Pond after the black gum tupelo trees.
The Battle of Tupelo was fought there during the Civil War, and later the railroad came to the town, opening up new industries and spiking population growth. This city is rich in American history and musical history too. It’s also a great place to live.
