Here’s some cool information and fun facts about Westerville, Ohio. New settlers came to the area in the early 1800s before Matthew and Peter Westervelt bought almost 900 acres of land in 1816. More families joined the community, and by 1830, there were over 700 residents living there.
The area was named Westerville in 1840, after the Westervelt family. In 1847 the Otterbein University was founded and became the first educational institution in the US to allow women unrestricted access to education as well as the first female faculty members and students of color. The Underground Railroad operated in the town before the Civil War, with some houses still standing today.
This historical city has continued to grow, and today the population is 41,103 people.
