Here’s some cool information and fun facts about Westfield, Massachusetts.
The Pocomtuc People lived in the area of Westfield long before European settlers arrived and called it Woronoco, “the winding land.” Traders built houses in the mid-1600s and as the community developed it was annexed into Springfield. The land was sold to English settlers and named it Streamfield for the 2 rivers that flowed by.
In 1669 the town was incorporated as Westfield because it was the westernmost settlement in the county. Agriculture was the main industry for 150 years until manufacturing took over in the 19th century. The town began manufacturing bricks, cigars, and whips and Westfield was known for its buggy whips. They also started building bicycles, pipe organs, and making paper products. It’s fair to say the town had an incredible mix of manufacturing. In 1920 it became a city and has thrived since then.
