Westland was originally named Nankin Mills, after the original 1842 working mill. The historic building still stands and was once owned by Henry Ford. Ford created his Villages Industries Project to enable farmers to work in the auto industry by having a manufacturing plant locally around their farms.
Just as Nankin Mills got it’s name from a local landmark, Westland too was named after the Westland Mall.

Here’s some cool information and fun facts about Westland, Michigan. In the 18th century, the Potawatomi Native American people called this territory home and various Algonquian tribes hunted in the area.
By the early 19th century European settlers started moving in. Originally called Nankin Township, Westland got its name from the Westland Shopping Centre.
When Nankin became a city, the township held a vote and it was decided that the town was to be named after the mall. The current population is 81,511.
