Native tribes lived in the area long before the arrival of European explorers and the Iroquois people sold their lands to Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
Captain John Durkee named the area Wilkes-Barre after John Wilkes and Issacs Barre, two members of the British Parliament. The town was settled in 1769 by the 19th century, coal was discovered. This attracted thousands of immigrants to work and mine in the area giving Wilkes-Barre the nickname “The Diamond City.” The city was prosperous and became incorporated in 1871. More industry developed and forever put this great city on the map.
